Within Mexican folk Catholicism, La Santa Muerte (“Holy Death”) is a unique and powerful spiritual figure. Depicted as a female skeleton carrying a scythe, often robed in red, white, green, or black and crowned, she embodies both mortality and protection. Devotees turn to her in search of love, prosperity, safety, and healing, offering roses, cigars, or tequila in rituals that are both deeply personal and profoundly symbolic.
Berlin-based guitarist Kalle Kalima and Vienna-based drummer Mareike Wiening draw the name of their duo from this rich cultural imagery. Together they create an intensely intertwined musical language in which guitar and drums merge into a single expressive voice. Their music evolves entirely through interaction—raw, immediate, and uncompromising—blurring the boundaries between experimental rock, free improvisation, and contemporary jazz.
The result is a sound that is elemental yet richly textured, rhythmic yet atmospheric, at times hypnotic and unexpectedly lyrical. Rather than merely referencing ritual, the music becomes a ritual itself: balancing strength and fragility, structure and surrender, the physical and the transcendent.
